BC Centre of Training Excellence in Mining

February 5, 2014

The government of BC is committed to providing British Columbians access to education and training programs that deliver work skills for the natural resource industries.  As part of this commitment the government announced in November 2012 the creation of a provincial Centre of Training Excellence in Mining (CTEM).

The Centre's key objectives are:

  • to support the province's training providers in meeting several mineral industry needs;
  • to ensure students have access to targeted training that will provide them with strong, marketable skills for the mineral exploration and mining industry

The Centre will not deliver its own training programs; rather it will provide support and advice to those who do.

When fully operational, the Centre will provide BC's post-secondary education system with a central point of contact dedicated to the development and sharing of skills and expertise supporting excellence in training for the mineral industry of the province.  CTEM staff and volunteers are currently reaching out to interested parties for input on how the Centre should be set up and how best to support the industry’s training needs. If you are unable to attend a regional workshop- you may still provide your input by contact CTEM and completing a questionnaire to help the Centre meet your needs.

Vision: To provide innovative training solutions for the mineral industry and BC Communities, collaboratively facilitated by a province-wide virtual hub.

Mission: Connecting industry, students, communities and training providers to meet employment needs by playing a leading role in determining industry skills requirements, facilitating responsive training and supporting partners.

The Centre of Training Excellence in Mining will be the “virtual” hub for linking the mineral industry, post-secondary providers, students, First Nations and communities. The Centre will help all these interested groups to work together to:

  • Foster innovation in the design and delivery of training and education for the mineral industry
  • Build partnerships to better meet training and education needs for mineral exploration and mining students and companies
  • Advertise training options for careers in BC’s mineral industry
  • Match students and employers
  • Enhance competitiveness and competitiveness of BC’s mineral industry
